The Devil's Arithmetic(en)

An American-born Jewish adolescent, Hannah Stern, is uninterested in the culture, faith and customs of her relatives. However, she begins to revaluate her heritage when she has a supernatural experience that transports her back to a Nazi death camp in 1941. There she meets a young girl named Rivkah, a fellow captive in the camp. As Rivkah and Hannah struggle to survive in the face of daily atrocities, they form an unbreakable bond.

The momentous film stars Mykola Nademskyi as the grandfather of Tymish, whom he alerts to the secret treasure buried in the mountains of Zvenygora – a treasure that rightfully belongs to his homeland. The film wonderfully blends both lyricism and politics and uses its central construct to build a montage praising Ukrainian industrialization, attacking the bourgeoisie, celebrating the beauty of the Ukrainian steppe and retelling ancient folklore. Sergei Eisenstein said of the film, "As the lights went on, we felt that we had just witnessed a memorable event in the development of the cinema".

King Minos sacrifices the 'required' virgins to the Minotaur. As his wife lies dying, she confesses that her daughter has a twin she has secreted to avoid giving one of the girls to the Minotaur. The daughter raised by Minos tries to have her twin killed, but failing in her first attempt, continues to try to have her given to the Minotaur. Theseus, the Greek hero, tries to prevent it.

At the end of an extraordinary situation in the village, when the people of the village cannot reach the government, they try to break a curse by organizing various rituals under the leadership of the Mukhtar and Kadir. After a while, the government official who comes to the village will confront the villagers with another reality in an authoritarian manner.

The sea is rumbling. My body was weakened by the south wind. Sea water seeped into the shivering veins. A king rises with new strength. The labuhan ritual was born as a form of gratitude. The fishermen continue this ritual. Offering after offering dissolves in the swish of the waves. Until one day a young man stood proudly. Human apathy towards nature ignites the anger of the sea. The waves crashed, the body moved uncontrollably. Dragged into the vortex of nature's punishment, his body twisted to the rhythm of the tide before finally being swallowed by the water.

Momotaro and Hidemaro are 1st-years at Otokojuku, a private boys school where true men are made.
