The protagonist's earthly life seems fleeting and meaningless to him, which is why 50-year-old Forry prefers the starry sky - he is a passionate amateur astronomer. By a strange coincidence, he travels with his best friend Theo to the Danube delta and ends up in Vilkovo, a town in Ukraine where the Lipovans live.
