In a society where freedom is considered the highest good, the question arises as to how the deprivation of liberty is perceived as a punishment. Despite rehabilitative approaches, imprisonment remains the maximum sanction. The principle of liberty becomes significant when the deprivation of freedom is imposed as a penalty—existence remains secured, but any freedom beyond that is taken away. What does the deprivation of liberty feel like? What significance does freedom hold when it is withdrawn? How does the public perceive the deprivation of liberty as a punishment, and what does the need for retribution look like? Is there an understanding of why freedom is being taken?
